Why do people think animal welfare is such a joke but think that they have inalienable rights?

animals are important. watch a little kid see a monkey for the first time and you'll get it. the truth is that each and every species of plant and animal is a treasure. humanity at large does not attach much value to those treasures (beyond fur or tusks) but life in all its forms has an immeasurable, cosmic value.
